Russian Milk
Hello all!
I reached my 4 month mark yesterday, so crazy! I cannot belive it has already been 4 months. I am so grateful for the opportunity I have to be here serving the Lord!
Live is going well over here in Russia. Our investigator, A, is still on track to be baptized this week! I am so excited for her! She stood up and bore her testimony in Sacrament yesterday, and it was so amazing to see how her testimony has grown :) I cannot wait for Saturday!
Also this week I got to try several different kinds of milk! (Our gem of a neighbor, N, wants us to experience Russian culture.) I am happy to report that Russian milk is delicious. One of the things we tried was Keefer, and it wasn't too bad. We also tried a kind that had been boiled, which tasted a lot like caramel!
We got two new investigators this week, from Armenia! Super excited for that!
Our branch got a ping pong table for Game Nights and Family Home Evening! It is huge! And one of our branch members started his mission papers! So that's awesome :)
I want to bear my testimony that the Gospel is true! I know that Jesus Christ lives and loves each one of us. What a blessing it is to be able to share that with people :)

Hey out there! Letter #8

What a blessing to get to have some back and forth conversation via email last night. Missing her bunches right now

Hey out there!
It has been a great week, but thankfully a bit less exciting than last week ;)
On Wednesday we had zone conference with Elder Kacher from the Europe East area quorom of the seventy. it was great! We talked a lot about how to be better missionaries, and I am excited to improve myself as a missionary!
The day after zone training we had splits with Sister Green and Sister Day! It was marvelous to see one of my MTC companions again! Sister Schouten and I were with Sister Green (the three newbies hahaha) and it was a blast!
That Friday Elder Kacher and President Childs came to Novgorod and gave a devotional to the branch! It was such a neat experience for our little branch here, I am so grateful they were able to come!
I apologize that this letter is so short! I hope that everyone has a great week!

Would you like to hear about how I ate my pancakes?
Okay, so one morning sister davis made pancakes, and they were good. But something interesting about Russia is that you can't actually really find maple syrup. However, their milk products make up for it because they always taste so much better than american. The butter for example is much creamier and sweeter. So, to make up for the lack of syrup I put a big chunk of butter on my pancake and wrapped it around, and ate it! hahaha
Me: so have you gained some weight!
Amanda: Haha like 2 pounds, nothing of note :)
We had some crazy russian pasta at zone conference! It had cheese, ham, bacon, noodles, probably mayo, spinach, tomatoes, and of all things, EGGS! But it was goo d:)
when I was on splits, sister Green took us to this little ice cream shop inside a grocery store that was amazing! (russian ice cream is awesome<3) and the little shope was selling ice cream, and then also dried fish, some weird russian salads, mini squid, and mini octopuses
Hahaha it was funny to think that we got our ice cream from the same place. man was it good though
This last Pday we went to the Kremlin Museum! It was amazing! They have so much history here, and there were artifacts that were hundreds and hundreds of years old! We also got to see the icon exhibit they have. In the Russian orthodox church they worship icons, which are paintings or metal engravings of usually angels, the 12 Apostles, or the Savior, or of baby jesus and mary. The icons were beautiful, but the most interesting thing was that they have a feeling about them. It isn't quite like how the Holy Ghost feels, but I felt a need to be respectful and quiet around them. Sister Davis said this about it: You can tell that people were trying to show and find the truths they knew, but something was missing. It was a really unique opportunity to be in the room with all of the icons. We will have to go someday and I will show you :)
Also this week in the Nevsky english group I met a man, E, who learned english from country musin! It was so funny, he kept calling me miss. He also says funny things. he told me he knew I was an alaskan by my boots, and that he knew Balto back in 1925 before they hung him (idk if the him was E or balto!). Sister Green said that when he first came to english group he introduced himself by saying he liked ice and was from he**! He is quite a character!!!!

Letter week #7 Amanda Scott
You will not believe this week!
Hey people!
This week has been the most ridiculous adventure!
Tuesday: This was a Russian Orthodox holiday called (well, in Russian) Baptism. They believe that Christ was baptized on this day, so on this day all the water becomes holy. They buy the water from their churches, and also on the river they baptize themselves (sometimes a couple times). So here was my Tuesday evening:
First we were contacting around the Kremlin, and we stopped and talked with a man who wasn't too interested in our gospel message, he would'nt take a pamphlet or a book of mormon. Then a girl we had talked to previously (also not interested in the gospel) came up to us and said hello, then started talking to the man! They didn't know each other, and my trainer Sister Davis, said that she was defending us and our church a bit. The next thing we know he gives us his number and said he would be interested! And then the girl just leaves the way she came!
After that we were walking on the sidewalk next to the river, when we see a group of people doing the baptisms (by the way, the river is frozen over, they had to cut a hole). Sister Schouten was walking a bit ahead of sister Davis and I, and as we watched these people they started taking off all of their clothes!!! Sister Davis and I both stopped and looked at eachother, but Sister Schouten didn't notice and kept walking! We started watching her, and we know the moment she noticed because she started laughing and real quick turns around and runs back to us hahaha.
Wednesday: We had a meeting with a member in our ward, and afterwards we were contacting, when Sister Davis started talking to a woman with a little baby in a stroller sled and a violin on he back, Sister Davis asked if she played, and the woman said yes and I am going to play right now, do you want to listen? So we follow her to her apartment, and then she called her friend to come over and they played piano and violin for us! It was awesome, they were so good!
Thursday: We were leaving the apartment for a lesson, and we were in the elevator, when all of a sudden it drops! All of the button lights go out, and we realize that the elevator had broken and we were now stuck in between floors! So we had to call and cancel our lesson, then use he alarm button to call the elevator people for help. We were stuck in there for almost an hour!
Friday: Pretty normal actually. The guy from Tuesday came to game night!
Saturday: Sister Schouten got lost on the bus! Sister Davis and I thought she was watching, so we got off at a bus stop near the church. But then we realize she wasn't with us, so we head back up a stop to find her. She wasn't there, so we tried the stop just past the one we got off at, still couldn't find her. We ended up having to take a bus along it's whole route to try and locate her (btw, she doesn't have a phone. they only had enough for me and Sister Davis) , call President, and then we decided we both felt like we should head to the senior couple's apartment. On our way there the senior couple calls and tells us that Sister Schouten was there with them. We were seperated for over an hour! I am so glad we are all back together and safe now :)
That night we met with an awesome new potential, and got chased by a demon dog. Sister Schouten kicked it though, and nobody got bit so that's good!
Sunday: Also pretty normal. Sister Davis and I ate omelettes made from quail eggs. They tasted 100% normal.
And that was my week! I love living in Russia, every day is such an adventure!
I also want to share a short testimony that I know that the Gospel is true. We get asked a lot why we are here, and people are sometimes so confused why we would come to Russia and leave America. I know that we are here because God loves ALL of His children, in every country. I feel so honored and grateful to have been called to serve the Russian people. I know God loves them, and I know that He loves you too. I know he wants us to be happy.

"The Gift of Tongs" letter #6

"The Gift of Tongues"
Hello everyone!
We got our hot water back on! Hurrah! It was quite an adventure not having hot water for a week, let me tell you! I am not looking forward ot the next time it happens! At least we still had power though, my trainer said once their landlord forgot to pay the electric bill and so they had no electricity!
This week I forgot everthing that happened. It has been the fastest week of the transfer yet. We did get a lot of snow this week! I am so excited, it really makes me happy! It has also been a bit warmer, so that's nice!
Last Monday we went to go look at this new grocery store. In the meat section we found... Coow tongues! Ah, they were so huge! Sister Schouten about died, it was so funny! But it set in motion the theme of tongues for this week I suppose, because on Saturday we went and had dinner with a little family in our branch, and they showed us something they were cooking. It was (drumroll please) pig feet and pig tongues! Now all I need is the gift of the Russian tongue, and everything will be good :) (I'm kidding by the way, I know I have a bit of the gift of tongues, because I somehow sometimes manage to speak in a bit of Russian!)
Also this week we had another meeting with our invesigator, G. (She fed us the chicken organs). We may have to stop meeting with her, it doesn't seem like she is interested in our message. That really breaks my heart, I know what a blessing the Gospel is.
I started reading Jesus the Christ this week! It's actually a really god book, so if you have ever thought about reading it, you should try! Don't let the size intimidate you haha. It does use a lot of big words though..
Learning Russian really does weird things to your brain. I've noticed in my journal that my spelling is not so good anymore. For example, I spelling the word blue as bloo.
Ah, we had dinner with our neighbor, N, and her daughter, J, the other day! N is a great cook, she made us this soup that had cabbage in it. They put cabbage in everything! And sour cream, J used it like butter on her bread. The sour cream tastes different here too, it's a lot sweeter and more like actual cream. They are both so fun! N is so funny, she talked to us for a long time about Russian milk and how you can use it to make Tvorig (a type of cheese here) and keefer, smetana (sour cream) etc. I love them both so much, they are so nice!
This week also I have started going through the lessons in Preach my Gospel. One thing that has really stood out to me is how much our Heavenly Father loves us. He really wants us to succeed in this life, both spiritually and secularly.
Anyway, since I can't remember my week at all I will close this letter. I hope thet everyone is doing well! I love you all, have a great week!

Below Zero! Letter #5
Amanda's letter #5 January 10, 2016
Below Zero!
Hello my dear friends!
I am sorry to say this will be another short email week! I will try to be better about managing my email time ;)
First and foremost, I just want to say that it has been below zero for most of the week! I think the warmest it has been in the past couple days is -6? (Oh, in Fahrenheit). Let me just say, BRRRRRR! But I actually really love it. It isn't so good for contacting though, lots of people just want to get inside! :) I am so grateful for warm clothes, hats, and hand warmers!
In the best sort of news, our investigator picked a baptismal date! It is set for February 13th! :) I am so excited and blessed to be here for that. It is an amazing thing to watch. She is truly amazing, she is so willing to accept the Gospel and al of the things LDS members do that seem strange at first. I am so excited for her and this step she is taking.
Something funny this week? Well, I asked my companions for their input and Sister Schouten said "Well, we all became friends this week!" It's true, we did all finally break that barrier! We talk and laugh all the time :) It's great! I love both of my companions, it really is such a blast to serve in a trio!
Also this week, we have no hot water in our apartment! Last Tuesday some pipes on the second floor burst. We should be getting hot water back tomorrow. I will be very excited to take a real shower.
This week we also got stood up by people who wanted to meet four times hahaha. No, it's not actually funny :) But we have also had some awesome experiences finding people this week while contacting, so it all evens out!
Hmm, what else? We had Russian Christmas dinner with our investigator who fed us organs the first time. And it was good! There were no chicken organs in that meal, and we had a fantastic lesson with her. We have some hopes :)
We also saw beef tongues in the grocery store the other day! That was weird. I seriously considered buying one, if I am being honest.
Anyway, I also wanted to say that these past couple weeks I have really been gaining a testimony of commandments, and how they really are blessings for us. I am so grateful for the commandments we have, they help give me guidance and safety. Heavenly Father is a pretty smart cookie ;)

Hello all!
I don't have a lot of time this week, so this email will be short. Sorry! I hope everyone had a great New Years!
Mine was great, there were lots of loud fireworks, loud neighbors, and weird foods. We had dinner with a member, and she served us haladietz, which for those who don't know is meat jello! They boil the meat until all the fat is out of it, add vegetables, and then stick it in the fridge. The fat gets cold and turns to jello with meat and vegetable chunks in it. In all honesty, it wasn't too bad. Except for the texture.
Yesterday we tracted! It was so much fun. It surprised me though how many people open the door without various clothing items on, like shirts. or pants. Thankfully, everyone had a least something on hahaha.
This week we got transfer calls! I will be staying in Novgorod with my companions this transfer! So excited!
ALSO. One of our investigators told us she wants to get baptized! Hopefully we will set a date this week! I am so so so thrilled for her!!!

Hello out there letter #3
Amanda's Letter #3 December 28, 2015
Hello out there!
How are all of you?
It was a crazy week here in Russia! We had Christmas and got to skype home, which was awesome. I miss my family so much, and it was so nice to get to speak with them! Other that that Christmas was a pretty normal day. Had a short lesson with an investigator, contacted, planned, studied. I hope everyone had a good Christmas!
Here is a fun story for you: So the woman who fed us the chicken last week (I think I emailed about this) came to our branch party, and at one point she was speaking with the branch president, and I guess she said something to him about calling Joseph Smith. Then later after the president had left she came up to us and gave us a business card to give to him. On Sunday we gave him the card and asked him what it was for. He told us that it has something to do with "other senses". From what i can gather, our investigator is a medium and spoke with (or tried) Joseph Smith! I don't have any idea what to do with that haha. But it sure is funny :)
In other news it finally got cold here! It even snowed a couple days ago! So we have a bit of snow and it's cold, finally I got some winter! I just love it. It's so fun to see everyone here in the big coats and fur ruffs with fur hats!
We have been doing a lot of contacting this week! The people here don't let the cold stop them from doing anything, which is pretty awesome.
We had our branch christmas party this week! We even had a Father Frost (that's what they call Santa here, and it was one of the Elders). It was so cute to see how excited the little kids were! The big family in our branch that skype in for church even go to come!
I did get to try another new, weird food this week! It was at the branch party. and it was some sort of potato-carrot-mayonaise-fish salad! It actually wasn't bad. I think I will be a weird eater when I come home hahaha.
It was such an honor to be a missionary for Christmastime. I can't think of a better way to serve my Savior than to be sharing His gospel while we celebrate His birth.

Hello out there!
How are all of you?
It was a crazy week here in Russia! We had Christmas and got to skype home, which was awesome. I miss my family so much, and it was so nice to get to speak with them! Other that that Christmas was a pretty normal day. Had a short lesson with an investigator, contacted, planned, studied. I hope everyone had a good Christmas!
Here is a fun story for you: So the woman who fed us the chicken last week (I think I emailed about this) came to our branch party, and at one point she was speaking with the branch president, and I guess she said something to him about calling Joseph Smith. Then later after the president had left she came up to us and gave us a business card to give to him. On Sunday we gave him the card and asked him what it was for. He told us that it has something to do with "other senses". From what i can gather, our investigator is a medium and spoke with (or tried) Joseph Smith! I don't have any idea what to do with that haha. But it sure is funny :)
In other news it finally got cold here! It even snowed a couple days ago! So we have a bit of snow and it's cold, finally I got some winter! I just love it. It's so fun to see everyone here in the big coats and fur ruffs with fur hats!
We have been doing a lot of contacting this week! The people here don't let the cold stop them from doing anything, which is pretty awesome.
